It is definitely NOT the 5&6 player expansion.  It makes the game way too long.

My personal favorite is Seafarers.  More places to conquer and get resources from, a robber AND a pirate -- but the best thing is that you finally have something to do with all those sheep you accumulate in the regular game.  It's much better balanced.than the original.

My vote is for Cities and Knights of Catan.

Depends on what you like.

Seafarers of Catan basically provides you more playing space but the rules stay pretty much the same.

Cities & Knights of Catan actually changes the game by adding in new city developments that can be built and barbarians to fight.  It definitely shifts the game strategy and makes Settlers a different game.

So if you've enjoyed the base game but want something slightly different, go with Seafarers (and btw - it's great if you have the 5+6 player expansion 'cause it makes the game much less crowded).  If you want to alter the gameplay, go for Cities.
