I was taught this in my African American history class!They were famous archaeologist and anthropologist who wanted to discover the origin of man.At the time scientist thought man originated in Asia, but Leakey believed that man originated in Africa. In 1959, Mary Leakey discovery the of oldest human-like bones at that time. They named the bones Zinjanthropus, the prefix Zinj means black and anthropus means man. The bones were 1,750,000 years old. In 1972, their son Richard Leakey discovery of a modern human skull in Africa that was 1,800,000 years old.

Knowledge is power, they were seekers of information as to where did we come from and what was our history, I am not sure if they studied humans but they did find out a lot about hominoids

Louis Leakey I believe was the one who gave the name Homo habilus to one of the finds at Olduvai Gorge around the1960s era, Leakey was delighted by this, it went nicely with his theory that there were different species of hominids existing, some of which became extinct while one of them " Homo habilus ultimately gave rise to modern humans. This was after thirty years of fruitless searching apart from a few minor bits and pieces. He also believed that the origin of the homo line went even further back in time. Many researchers could not bring them selves to accept this, at that time.
