American  the Raptor  or the F-14 Tomcat

Currently in service, I'd say hands down the F-22 Raptor. It's stealthy, maneuverable, and can carry a decent payload in weapons.

In the near future however, I'd say the JSF-35 AKA F-35 Lightening II. It has several different configurations for different uses including a STOVL (Short Take Off and Vertical Landing), a carrier based model, and a standard take off and landing model, all obviously meant for different things and operations. Not to mention it's freaking beautiful.

The F-14 is out of date (in fact, it's retired), the Harrier is ineffective as a fighter plane simply because it's so slow (although great for ground support), and the SR-71 is not a Fighter Plane, it's used mainly for recon. The Typhoon is alright, but again it's getting a little out of date.

F-22 and Typhoon are top fighters nowadays... both excellent contenders, although I think the F-22 has a slight edge. Granted the Typhoon is more maneuverable, but the F-22 isn't really built for dogfighting, rather, sneaking up, shooting the enemy out of the sky, then sneak up on someone else.
