I would like to build a houseboat about 10 feet wide by 20 feet long and i know a raft floats if you stand on it but wont hold much weight and isn't very strong. What material should i use and then i will build the house part and place it on top of the floating bottom of the boat, and add a 150 horse motor to power it. Or would i be better off buying a houseboat? Thanks

  1. i would check around first, you might be better off buying a run down housebopat and fixing it up--- if you were to build one aluminum pontoons are the best, however can you weld alum, it is very expensive to have this work done. Also a 150 hp might be a little too large for that size houseboat, your not water skiing from it just need to get around.  good luck

  2. Hi i would bye a house boat made by a boat builder. There is more to it that meets the eye. I myself build boats and this knowledge has been passed down to me by many generations and you would not need all that horse power

  3. Not much of a boater here, but I would think foam filled aluminum pontoons.  You may also be able to put a couple small camping type trailers onto your platform (well centered of course).  Just a couple of my thoughts.......Good Luck

  4. Marine-grade, aluminium alloy BS5083.

See the web site for "Sea Otter Boats".

  5. Foam filled aluminum pontoons. I would use twin motors with counter rotating props.
