  1. Pygmy goats are easy to care for but they do have a few requirements.

They should be allowed to eat as much hay or pasture as they want.  They should always have clean water available.  They should have goat minerals available at all times.  Does in milk should receive a ration of grain once or twice per day.

Breeding Pygmies is different than some goat breeds.  Because of their stocky build, birthing problems are more common than in other breeds.  A Pygmy doe should never be bred before she is 1 year old, and most responsible breeders wait until closer to 18 months.  Some extremely small does can never be bred safely.

Since Pygmy does go into heat every three weeks, year round, does and bucks need to be kept separately except when breeding.  It's unhealthy for the doe to be bred more than once yearly.  They will rebreed a few days after they kid if a buck is present.

Also, some doelings can have their first heat as early as 2 months of age, and most bucklings will be fertile and willing at around 2 months also.  Pregnancy at that age would be very dangerous, so it is important to separate doelings and bucklings by the time they are around 8 weeks old.

  2. Caring for Pygmy goats is not that different from caring for any other species of goat, or any other animal for that matter, just in smaller portions. Pygmy goats need food, water and shelter just like the rest of us. Kids, weanlings, yearlings, pregnant does, lactating does, and bucks each have different needs.

Does can be bred at 7-8 months of age if they have reached good size. Bucks can be used for service as young as 3 months of age and easily by the time they are 7 or 8 months old. ♥
