  1. I've tried special brushes for braces and it just didn't make a difference - use your regular favorite brush and toothpaste.

The greatest thing I found is a inexpensive ($30) portable battery-powered WaterPik.  They are great at keeping your teeth and gums clean and removing food from your brackets and between your teeth.  In just a minute or so your teeth are super clean.  I have the WaterPik 360W and it has worked great for me.

Brushing + WaterPik + Crest Pro-Care rinse has worked great for me.  My dentist and orthodontist are very happy with the results.

You will want to find some plastic dental picks that you can carry around and use to remove stuck food from between your teeth and under your braces.  I personally like the DenTec Brush Picks - they have a plastic pick on one end and a bristled wire at the other end.  You want something good and versatile to help you when something gets stuck.

As for floss, I found that ultimately I really just couldn't do it.  I couldn't get my big hands in my little mouth and around all of the brackets and wires.  I tried EVERY product out there.  Luckily, I'm pretty committed to my WaterPik and that has been a really good replacement.  My dentist and orthodontist both admitted that they'd never *recommend* someone not flossing, but strongly encouraged the use of a water pik, especially if flossing was difficult or problematic.
