What is the best form of spending money to use in London?

We are in the US. My 16 year old niece is traveling to London at the end of this month......different aunts and grandparents want to give her "spending money". This will amount to about 400.00 (I wish I were going), anyway she does not have a credit card so what is the best way to give her British pounds to spend?

Travellers cheques in sterling, She can hen cash these up whenever she needs to. If anything happens and you loose these you can claim them back as long as you have kept the reciept seperately
