Avast is far better: antirootkit, antispyware, p2p protection, Messenger protection, autoprotection, fast and reliable updates - none available to any other free antivirus; AVG doesn't have them even in the paid version.

I have tried other but most seem to slow the computer down to a crawl

Probably Avast at present. There are a number of better programs, but they either have no free version or their free versions are crippled.
