What is the best free or trial antivirus and antispy ware available?

Are you poor?  Get norton antivirus and never worry again. How can you trust software that is free for something as important as antivirus and anti intrustion. I don't and never will. Will you work for free?

A very good, free anti-virus available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:

Also, for protecting your personal info and files, use Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition:

All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don't use up as many resources.

Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

Well you certainly have opened yourself up to a lot of discussion here. Ok you're going to hear about programs like AVG, Avast, Avira, Spyware This, Spyware That....Avoid like the plague any and all so called "Security Suites", the all in  one anti-virus, firewall, spyware and spam program....I've never heard of one that was any good and they're all resource hogs (taking lots of power to use), give Twister anti-virus a try, FREE for 90 days, for both XP and Vista. If you have XP, download the FREE firewall from that same site, if you have Vista, keep the anti-virus and forget the firewall, not Vista compatible. You want to save a whole lot of grief, don't open up any e-mail from anyone you don't know, don't open up any junk mail and scan every attachment you save before you open it. Stay away from Limewire and other P2P programs. Keep your computer running smoothly and run routine maintenance such as defrag and check disk. Erase temp files, learn where to get FREE help. Run a FREE on-line scan and learn about Safe Mode. If you have Vista, use twister and vista's own firewall and one spyware program.

Most of us have our favorites - I like AVG and Alvira for antivirus and Spybot and ad aware for antispy ware .
