There is no best Anti-virus program there are viruses that will not be detected by one program, but will be detected by another, so it's a good idea to have more than one, as multiple programs complement each other, but don't run them at the same time as they will be working against each other,(what this means is you have programs 1 & 2, running at the same time, and program 1 finds a virus and deletes it from the system, in the mean time program 2 found the same virus and you use program 2 to delete the already deleted virus. The result: waste of time, and system resource's)

If you want very good protection. I would recommend that you purchase Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/. (From a store like Future Shop, or Staples. So you have the physical copy of the program). From what I have heard about it. It seems to be one of the best protection programs out there And it has hourly updates.

I use all of these myself, and all of them are free, they are very effective.

1 Ad-Aware 2008, Much more effective than previous versions and faster, does not suck up system resources like the previous versions, also there various skins to suit your preferences.

4 Simple File Shredder, it isn't an anti spy, but it shreds unnecessary files including cookies and it speeds up system performance.

Also. I suggest that you stay away from online anti-spy scans. As it is not hard for a cracker to hack it, and insert some malicious code into the program which after scanning will give you even more virus's. (That's how my computer got infected once, and after that I have been advising people to stay away from them).

I personally don't like AVG, it screwed up my computer after I Un-Installed it, and Avast didn't work for me. And Trend Micro, has poor detection rates (I tried it a few week's ago (downloaded) and scanned, it found 3 items. I ran Ad-Aware after that and it found 18 items that trend micro passed right over).

And I would advise you to stay away from P2P, programs. As they are an excellent vector for infections.

do you mean that your on the internet without protection? I would think by now everyone on the net would have learned you must have a anti virus program running at all times.All right since your the only one left who isn't, first realize your going to have to spend some money on one. Get one of the name brands Norton,Mcafee, there ore others, while the free one work somewhat they are not as reliable as the paid ones. As for the interim try one of the one line scanners like trend micros house-call WWW. trendmicro.com, there are others that have been suggested by others but YOU NEED TO HAVE ONE RUNNING ALL THE TIME!! you should also have at least 3 anti spyware scanners running once a day,sugestions Adaware,spybot search and destroy,yahoo anti spy(on there tool bar) just to name a few. good luck

I use a combination. AVG Anti-virus is quite good and has a free version that runs all the time and keeps your computer virus-free.

For spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy is excellent, and free. I don't like its resident tools as much (kind of buggy), but for downloading and running once to immediately clean out spyware, I have found it to be quite good.

If you have Windows XP or higher, I have also had good results with Windows Defender in keeping things clean. It's built into Vista and I think XP Service Pack 2. You might otherwise need to go manually download it.

AVG has an antirootkit - Avast has one also, but AVG's is easier.

Once you sweep for viruses, to keep your PC virus free, I reccomend Avast4Home (free) antivirus.

If you are in college some schools offer free antivirus software through license rights that they have with certain companies.  At texas tech we can download norton antivirus for free.
