  1. A goldfish... anything more is going to need more maintenance.

  2. Well, it depends on what other fish are in the 40 gallon.

If it's a tropical community, I'd go with a tetra or something small.

A betta would work too so long as it got along with the fish in the other tank [no bright colors and no flowing fins on the other fish in the tank]. No goldfish unless your 40 gallon is set up for cold water fish as well. Even so, get a very small fantail or something.

Don't listen to the fact that a goldfish can't live without HUGE filters because "they're dirtier than other fish"- It isn't true. They give off no more waste than other fish of their size.

Just make sure to keep up with slight water changes and keep the filters running! Good luck!

  3. ok for 2 months a betta is ok but only for 2 months

may i ask what the project is

  4. not a goldfish, they produce to much waste. a beta or a neon tetra would be okay.

  5. Well it depends what fish you have I would recommend a female(no males most really don't do well with other fish and are very happy alone) betta however maybe you can get a bigger tank size such as between 2-3 gallons

EDIT: If you get a 2 gallon you can maybe add 5-6 tetras

  6. There are several resilient tropical freshwater fish.  I would try these, as I have had good luck with them:

Neon Tetras (any pet store will have them)

    Cardinal Tetras

Black Tetras (I once had one that lived for 7 years!)

    Good luck.
