  5. According to EPA figures, the best non-hybrid car with decent space inside is the base-motor Toyota Corolla. The EPA claims it does around 30MPG mixed, but some sadists who take the five-speed get in the high-thirties by accelerating very slowly and shifting conservatively. The Yaris actually only does a tiny bit better on fuel, but it has a VERY low base price if you can forgo air conditioning/power anything and don't mind spending another 100$ on a dash radio at Circuit City. Then there's the pricy hybrids, the best of them probably being the Prius. Just know they get their best relative efficiency in the city and NOT on the highway.

The Smart Car has an EPA rating mixed of about 37 or 38, but it takes premium, seats two, and has a mere one liter of displacement.

Historically, the Chevy Sprint could do over 50MPG on the highway because it had a one liter and weighed about fifteen hundred pounds. Too bad American spurned them!

  6. "Tesla" does not use gasoline. Bit pricey but never  buying gas would be nice.
