  1. A Prius, but good luck finding one.  Failing that, the previous answer about the Geo Metro or equivalent is spot-on.

  2. You need to look at initial cost as well as fuel savings. One of the best values right now are 2007 Malibu's which are selling in the $12-13k range. The 4 cylinder models are being real world reported to be getting 35+ MPG. A 1 year old Prius will get around 45 hwy, but will cost you over $20k.

Camry's (unless hybrids) are not that great on gas. You may hit 30 hwy, but my Impala will come close, sometimes over.

Another thing to look at on Hybrids is what your style of driving is. If you do the majority highway, they don't realize as much savings, since they are considerably higher in town.

I had a Jetta TDi that would average around 38 and would get as high as 48 on the highway.

Find a fuel savings calculator to help figure out how much it would save you versus initial cost. Most people would be surprised how little they actually save!

  3. I just heard that a Camry is great!  My daughter was looking for used cars herself.

  4. A stick shift auto with a 3 or 4 Cly. engine.Geo Metro gets about 40 miles per gal. or better.

  5. VW TDI.  We have 3 of them in the family and routinely get 750 Miles (1200 Km)  on a tank which holds 55L (14.5 Gallons) of fuel.  BTW they run on Diesel fuel, not gas.
