  1. Please bear with me, because I am going to suggest a series of books that in my belief should be read in the order presented.

    1. Better Golf a Skill Building Approach: by the late Julius Richardson. This book focuses on putting players new or established in the proper positions to execute their swings, from full to chipping, from half swings to putting. Has great drills. Brilliant book and one of the best ever written for beginners, or people who want a fresh slate for their golf game.

    2. Practical Golf; by John Jacobs. The genius of this book is not only about the golf swing, but understanding what you may have done in your swing based upon ball flight. Essentially, the ability to learn to swing properly by interpreting how your ball has reacted.

    3. Understanding the Golf Swing; by Manuel De La Torre. Wonderful book, easy to read, but made easier to understand after reading the first two on this list.

    4. How to Turn On Your Power; by Rick Martino. Essentially, by this time, you will be able to use this great instruction to gain more distance. Something that is easier to do after reading Julius Richardson's book first because if you adhere to Richardson's drills, your body will be in the proper positions to generate the kind of power Martino teaches.

    5. Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf; by the late Ben Hogan. I consider this the graduate course in golf instruction. Highly detailed and if a person reaches this book, then they possess the dedication to practice that will maximize its worth.

All of these books can be purchased on Amazon.com. I know several instructors who all have these five books in common.

    Good luck and have fun.

  2. Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus is the one that I hear most pros refer to.

The best short game book, in my opinion, is "Getting Up and Down" by Tom Watson.

  3. Harvey Penick's Little Red Book. Google it. The Bible for Golfers.

  4. Jimmy Ballads book, its all about connection in the golf swing, its out of print now but its a great book

  5. For rules just get the USGA rules book ($5).  For basics on how to hit the ball get Hogan's book "Five Lessons, the Modern Fundamentals" ($12)

  6. the site below has lots of great ebooks with some great golf instructions (affordable prices).
