  2. I think any kind of  hamster cage would work.

Either a 20 gallon tank or as big a bin cage as you can make.  I made a bin cage for mine out of a 105 qt Sterilite storage bin from walmart; I cut out holes in the sides and in the lid and then covered them with mesh.  They're really good, just google "bin cage" and you can find lots of ideas.

    Crittertrails are way too small for syrians (imagine living in a space the size of the average bathroom), and they often get too big for the tubes.  Actually, most cages sold in pet stores are too small for any kind of hamster.  I've found most pet stores really don't know how much space hamsters need and people end up buying too small cages or buy crittertrails/habitrails/sam cages just because they think they're cute.
