My TOM TOM bit the dust so now I am looking to replace it. I was happy with its performance, but I really don't want to pay $400 for a GPS again. Can someone tell me where I can get information maybe side by side comparison with prices? Thanks.

  1. Do you really want a handheld?  Because those just beep and show turn instructions on the screen.  They don't offer spoken directions and the screen is a lot smaller than you will find on an automotive GPS receiver.

You don't have to spend $400 for a GPS receiver anymore.  For $150 you can get a basic Garmin nuvi 200.  My only criticism of it is the lack of text-to-speech capability.  It says "turn right" instead of "turn right on Oak Street."  For $210, you can get the nuvi 260, which does offer text-to-speech.

Garmin offers a nuvi comparison chart on their website.
