  1. Apologia.  The best, tried the rest and tossed them.

  2. AQA, is fairly easy, however the questions are often oft he nature that are to simple, and easy stuff is overlooked, however with revision, they arfe simpel enough.....i have just finished my course with them and got A* in all three sciences

  3. I love, Love, LOVE Apologia! It has ignited my youngest daughters passion for science!

    This is for elementary students:

Dr Jay Wile wrote the 7th through high school curriculum and  it is awesome as well.

    edit:

Just HAD to add, Apologia does a wonderful job of laying out creation and evolution side by side. You do get more of the basics, and for us that are believers, it exposes the inconsistencies the THEORY of evolution has. And there are a lot! It is all there for further review though. My kids love it because it is so hands on and you can go as far as you choose with it. Also, we have had several kids in our co op come through the high school programs and go to college level classes where they are flourishing. Don't try and tell me that this doesn't prepare them for college, we have seen many times it does, They still reference  the material in college.

    (getting off my soap box)

  4. I wholeheartedly recommend Apologia.  It is complete, thorough, easy to use, and comes in printed, MP3, and CDRom format (so it fits all learning styles).

It's also the one set of books my son won't let me sale or lend out :-)

Edit - ro, kids who go through the Apologia program are normally at the top of their class in their college science classes.  Many even bring their books with them to college as an extra supplement, and find them very useful.  They understand ideas like evolution just fine, and they also understand all of the concepts that are taught in their class.  Apologia is very heavy on making sure that the concepts behind the science are understood.  The advanced courses are easily on an AP level.

Just because they don't espouse evolution doesn't mean they don't teach the basis of it, or that the kids are completely ignorant of it.  My fifth grader has gone through many of the Apologia textbooks and understands as much about evolution as many adults do - more than some, actually.

  5. Apologia is wonderful! It is from a Christian point of view so you would have to supplement it with something to teach the basics to evolution. But at least it lets you teach the student that both are theories and neither has been definitively proven. I've tried another program and we hated it. It was way to simplistic for a 3rd grader.

EDIT: We're using the 5th day and haven't gotten to any evolution yet but I can't wait to start helping my daughter poke holes in the theory! lol! I'm glad to hear that they do a side by side and let them really explore the differences.

  6. If your child wants to go on to any college teaching science from a christian based book will only hurt them.  They will not do well in placement testing and will have to take the very basic basic level college sciences and work their way up.  Unless of course they only attend Christan based colleges then they will be fine but they will eventually have to face a world where science is testable and creationism is not and is looked at as a philosophy.

  7. I would recommend Apologia Science.

  8. Be careful and specific when asking this question. The reccomended curriculums are all from Christian publishers and so tend to espouse creationist or ID ideas. That's fine if that's what you're looking for but if you want mainstream and secular science you'd do better with something like Science Matters (http://www.singaporemath.com/Science_Mat...

People who reccomend curriculum from Christian publishers, especially when it comes to science, should be upfront about what that entails.

EDIT: Am I getting thumbs down because I pointed out what others should have pointed out about Apologia and other Christian curriculum? I'm sure Apologia is a fine curriculum people...Just be *honest* (as Renee was) about what exactly it is so the people you're responding to have the information they need.

  9. Apologia is a very popular and thorough one. I have heard rave reviews about it. Some really like A Beka, although more than one person I've encountered who has tried both A Beka and Apologia has said that Apologia was better.
