My mom is going to take me out of public school, and in to home schooling. I need a good system, and a reason why. Also it has to be for a person that is going to take 7th and 8th grade including German.

  3. I am a homeschooling parent in South Carolina.

First, your mom needs to visit http://www.HSLDA.org to discover the laws about homeschooling in South Carolina.

Second, she will need to join an Accountability Association (assuming she goes with Option 3 of the law, which is the option that most South Carolinian homeschoolers choose).  I DO NOT recommend SMILE, as I and numerous other people have had trouble with them.

Third, I suggest she find a homeschool support group.  Tell her to check out http://groups.yahoo.com and type in "Greenville Homeschoolers"-I am sure something will pop up.

The support group is good for getting together for coop classes and field trips, but also for getting information from other homeschoolers.  She could probably review the materials others in the group use before buying her own-I highly recommend that because it is quite expensive and often, the first thing you buy might not be something that you actually like later.

You can get free catalogs from many companies, including A Beka, Bob Jones, ACE, etc.  Rainbow Resource has a thick catalog full of a variety of materials, complete with reviews on all of them.  It is free as well.  The A Beka website has a listing of materials displays, and there might be one near you that you and your mother could attend.

As for German, your mother could get a program such as Rosetta Stone, a tutor, or you could take a course at your local community college.

There is a popular series called "What Your ___ Grader Needs To Know", but the books are only Preschool-Grade 6 as of right now.  However, if you visit the website (COre Knowledge), they have a Sequence for Preschool, and then one for K-8.  Your mother could use that to find materials to teach you with, without a curriculum (materials from your local book store, library, etc).

The website for World Book Encyclopedia also has a Typical Course of Study listed for each grade, under the parents section.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best.  If your mother would like to, she can contact me via my profile.

  4. I don't know but if she can't find a system, she should teach you herself with the A beka curriculum.  That's what I used all of my life and graduated on.  I really enjoyed it.  And if your mom doesn't want to teach you, move on up here to Dayton, Ohio and my mom runs a homeschool called Back 2 Basics. I'm sure she'd enjoy your business:)

  5. Your question is a little confusing and I think it's because you don't have all the background information you need.

First of all, what is a "system"? You mean a program? She's having you pick the program and you have to explain why it's a good program? What is she going to do if you don't find a good program?

It also sounds like you are wanting to do the same thing as in the public schools. If so, you should perhaps consider doing online schooling instead of homeschooling: http://www.k12.com/scvcs/ For the German, you'd undoubtedly have to find your own thing on the side. Check into Power-Glide or The Learnables.

  6. I would suggest you check out my web site for home schoolers listed below. If I can be of any further help have your mother e-mail through my web site and I can e-mail her my phone number for further help. I live in Greenville, Sc and I would be willing to answer her questions. I have taught home schoolers before. Have a nice day and I am here to help.
