I am having my first child and would like to know of any opinions on a great hospital in Northern Virginia to have my child. I currently live in Alexandria. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  1. I don't know if it's still there, as I live in Central VA now and this was 21 years ago, but I was born at Kaiser Permanente in Alexandria and my mom said it was a wonderful experience.

  2. Inova Fairfax Hospital but you should check with your ob and see what hospital she/he is affiliated with.

  3. You probably wouldn't go down to Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, but if you are considering it, I wouldn't.  I had my daughter there almost 2 years ago, and had an awful experience.  My doctors were great (I had a c-section), but once they left me with hospital staff, my stay was anything but pleasant.  I was in SO much pain right after surgery to the point where i started to go into shock, and when I told the nurse, all she said was, You know that it's gonna hurt, right?"

I had a few very nice nurses, but not a single one brought me my pain meds without me having to call and ask for it.  It was every 3 hours for 3 or so days.  I was exhausted, frustrated, and in pain the whole time.

I wish I knew of a good one in Alexandria, but I hope my warning about Potomac helps.

  4. When I worked in NoVA (Reston) I heard wonderful things about both Reston and Fairfax Hospitals for delivery. I think anywhere in the area has great hospitals, if you can schedule appointments to go and see where you would like have your baby. If it's a toss up, stick close to home or where your OB delivers.
