  1. Food-grade plastic 55-gal drums.

    e.g.:

  2. I store canned water and filtered water in 2 1/2 gal stack-able bottles. I use smaller containers, because if they  get damaged not all my water will be wasted. I also store canned vegetables and fruits for the water content in them. Again, I avoid large containers except as receptacles for smaller ones.

  3. Stock up on cans of dehydrated water.

  4. Any containers used, store bought or whatever, should be kept in the dark and in a cool place.

Light and warmth are needed for bacteria to grow.

Make sure the containers are air tight if you want potable water.

Any water that is old or stale can be sanitizied with a few drops of bleach(No perfumed bleach). Let it sit open overnight and most of the bleach odor should be gone.

Pouring it back and forth between two containers helps get rid of the stale taste by aeration.

Another way is to get a membrane, personal water filter.

Lifestraw is one, there are many others that will, depending on size, produce up to 24 gallons a day(no electricity needed) from most any water source but seawater.
