Can't believe you didn't get any answers, Philip!  I can recommend Denn Bar in the Westgarth restaurant/cinema/shopping area: it's not a pub, but it's got a roaring fire and GREAT tapas!!   (Avoid the sparkling brut by the glass though - very heavy white wine.)  The cinema's nice too.

It's in High St, Northcote, near the intersection with Westgarth Street.
