  1. Lose fill batt insulation is the cheapest and easiest to apply to you attic, but it will not give as much Resistance fire and acoustic  value as some other product on the market.  Keep in made when shopping for insulation where it's going to be installed (roof or floor) and what value is most important to you. For example I would say regular roof -lose fill batt

for an attic with an office I would say - acoustic in the attic floor and rigid in the roof.  When insulating the attic remember to ventilate properly to prevent Ice damming during the with months and reference you local building code or building department for minimum requirement.

  2. In my opinion it is fiberglass batts...

That stuff that is made from recycled newspapers loses effectiveness after years. And, some studies have shown it promotes mold growth...

  3. if you plan to use the attic for storage, consider fiberglass bats between the floor joists.  If not, the blown in type is cheap, effective and easy to install.  Just rent the machine that shoots it out a hose, and have a friend down on the ground feed the machine the material while you aim the hose up in the attic.

  4. Spray foam. We used standard fiberglass insulation on the majority of our house (I'm not sure of the rating.) Then a year later, we added an addition and used soybean based spray foam with the same R value on the addition. Because the spray foam has no gaps in the insulation, it is much nicer in the addition than it is in the rest of the house. I wish our friend had been a foam dealer when we originally started our home remodel project. It's also really cool to watch them install it.

  5. The best insulation on the market is spray foam insulation it's pricey but it is the best
