  1. Not sure of a specific place in Florida, but I do remember in NC, we had to be on the plan a minimum of 3 months before actually getting pregnant or they would not cover.  Whoever you go with, make sure you know the ALL the details and exceptions.

  2. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..understand that all insurance companies are not the same. Some actually waive waiting periods for pre-existing conditions (prex), it definitely depends on your employer. If you elect to work for the federal government/local or state agency, I know some of them tend to waive PREX. Sometimes it depends on if you had insurance before, but sometimes not.

If you are shopping for individual coverage, not through an employer, i will call at least 2 insurance companies and get them to send information about individual plans they may offer, then compare. Blue Cross i hear is pretty good in Florida.

  3. I hope your not currently pregnant. Because if you are no individual insurance company will issue you coverage.

With Blue Cross of FL you have to ahve your policy for 30 days before conception can occur.

With all the different health carriers and plans available most people really should use a health insurance broker. A Broker represents multiple carriers and can help you sort through all the different insurance companies and plan options in your state.

For example a typical broker can have access to 10 major carriers and 60 different plans just for one state.

You can try doing your own research on the internet, but if you give a good broker 5 minutes they will be able to make suggestions on which carrier may fit you best.

I suggest using yellowpages.com to search for health insurance brokers in your area.

Don't call your auto and home agent they specialize in property and causality insurance. You need someone that specializes in health insurance.

    Good Luck

  4. Your employer's group plan.

See, most individual plans don't have maternity coverage, because only the people planning on putting in the claim, will buy it.  The ones that do, have a clause that you have to have coverage 270 days BEFORE you get pregnant - that's 9 months.  So you have to pay into it 18 months before the baby gets there - effectively pre-paying for the claim.

And if you're already pregnant, it's too late to get a private policy.  If you're not, go to a local, independent agent, and they can get you quotes and explain the costs and options.
