What is the best insurance for a Canadian diamond?

I bought my fiance a Canadian / "conflict-free" diamond. I'd like to purchase insurance for it, but I'm concerned about the replacement terms. A lot of companies don't pay out the retail replacement price, instead offering to replace the ring at a retailer of their choice. Are there a companies that take into account the "ethical" origin of the diamond?

  1. I would get triple eh!

  2. Try State Farm Insurance, they insure from an appraisal for replacement cost of the same item.  Check with several reputable companies.  They may not find for you the specific diamond but you would be reimbursed for the cost/value of that diamond.

  3. No.  Ethical origin only has value for a few people.  Empirical value is what gets insured.

However, you can buy an "agreed amount" policy for that diamond - it costs more, but instead of paying you the wholesale replacement value, it will pay you the amount you insured it for.

Most companies WILL make this endorsement available if you request it, but won't necessarily offer it if you don't ask about it.
