What is the best kind of FM recieving Antenna?

Question

The FM reception in our area is too poor, I want to set up an antenna to make the reception better.

The thing is that I dont have any idea about antennas..... so please suggest a type of antenna.

Location India, West Bengal, (Remote Village).

Illustrations are most welcome.

First you have to know the FM transmitting & Receiving system.  As per Rule FM (88-108 MHz) bands falling under VHF Band (30-300 MHz).  Which is normally a "line of sight communication".  Basically it means those transmitting towers you can see straight, you can listen their transmission.

When you are residing a remote village of West Bengal.  You did not mention the location of your.  So that I can suggest you which FM transmitter is nearest to you and direction.

Normally at whip or telescopic stick antenna is sufficient to receive the FM transmission.  But due to long distance from the transmitter you have to use a some gainable antenna compare to whip or telescopic antenna (0dB gain).

You can install a simple yagi antenna.  This type of antenna is very gainful antenna.  Using for long distance communication by the professionals all over world.  But it is very difficult to get a FM band Yagi antenna in your locality.

Substituely you can use a 3 or 5 or 7 elements TV antenna for channels 2-4.  Which was very much popular Terrestrial TV reception system, when Cable TV system was not there in your neighborhoods.  And use a good quality feeding cable.  Install the antenna as much as highest location.

Another better option is for you using a Booster with this TV antenna.

Cable will be connected one end with the antenna folded dipole portion.  And one lead of another end will be connected with your receiver antenna, other lead will be connected with your receiver ground / chassis.

Focus the antenna to the transmitter location.  Tune the receiver for the reception.
