What is the best kind of SLR digital camera on the market for under $1,200?

May I suggest the Nikon D80? I got mine back near thanksgiving for $1,000. It has since gone down in price to $799.99. I have been doing a fairly large range of shooting circumstances with it. While it's only shoots at 3 FPS, that's been fine for me in most circumstances. Nikon finally started to get in gear with its high-ISO, high noise problem with this camera also. While not as good as a much higher priced Canon, it's still much better than the D-70s that I previously owned.One other thing, in my mind that makes Nikon preferable to Canon, is even it's somewhat "lower end" cameras are built like tanks. These things can withstand some pretty hard shocks, however with Canon you need to spend upwards of $1,500 to get a sturdy camera. Long story short, I am an aspiring professional photographer, and I have loved my Nikon D80.

Well, you certainly do have a lot of options. I'm not going to name just one cause I'm not sure what would suit you best... but I do suggest you look into getting the Canon 40D, Canon Rebel XSi, Canon Rebel XTi, Nikon D80, or Nikon D60. Go to the camera store and check these out, then pick the one that you're most comfortable with. Often, when people buy their first camera they'll either choose the newest and most expensive one, or the cheapest one and invest the rest of their money in new lenses as well (but that's usually when they plan on upgrading camera bodies in a few years)... whatever makes you happy! :o)
