  1. The best kind is a filter that utilizes a mechanical, chemical and biological filtration process, especially if all three are seperate. If you are looking for an "over the back of the tank" filter, my favorite is Aquaclear filters, and I have heard LOTS of good things about them. You switch out each part (Bio sponge, chemical filtration etc) at different times so there is always established bacteria. Plus, they have a bunch of different chemical filtration, like charcoal, ammonia remover, algea remover, etc. Also, If you are going to have a well stocked tank, get a filter higher then your tank size. Like if you have a 30 gallon tank, instead of getting a 20-30 gallon filter, get a 30-50 gallon filter. Hope this helps!

  2. i would say a external canister filters

they offer a large settlement area or good ammonia detoxifying bacteria and can hold various media

  3. I prefer the Aqua-Tech filter. They are easy to use, and quiet! The filter pads are also easy to change. Finally, they are cheap (10 dollars for a 5-15 gallon filter) and have great quality!

  4. In my situation it is the regular charcoal filter you buy at wal-mart. I had a 30 gallon tank that had about 15 fish and it really kept the tank clean. Of course regular maintenance is a must with any filter you go with. It just depends on your tank size, fresh or salt water, species of fish and so on. Contact your local pet store with the details and they would be glad to help. Best of luck.
