I was thinking maybe a rubber snaffle or an apple snaffle

  1. Any plain jointed snaffle bit with a thick mouthpiece will do fine.  Nothing with a shank, and nothing with a thin or twisted mouth on it.

  2. The rubber snaffle would be a great bit to start a horse with.  It will give when the horse chews on it to grow accustomed to it.  Once your horse is used to the bit and your training is moving forward, you may want to switch him over to the same type of bit with a copper mouth...also called a sweet bit.
