I personally love Sony's line of Cyber-shot cameras. Most of them come in nice colors, too.

Depends what you want to take photo's of. If it's just family and friends, just get a good digital camera for a few hundred dollars (like a canon or nikon) or if you want a good zoom for taking photo's in nature or something, then get something like an SLR (once again canon or nikon). No matter what size or features it has, you want it to be a good brand because that will determine the quality of your shots.

There is no way to answer this question, because we have no idea of your photography skills or what you can afford. Since you just want to take a "bunch of pictures", I would expect that you will do fine with a cheap digital point and shoot camera. Take a look at the Fujifilm models. They have decent image quality, good zooms and the batteries last forever.
