Something big like a lab that has a lot of energy, is nice, and durable. My sister's 12 year  old still doesn't understand how to be gentle with small dogs so i always get the big ones.

i have a black lab and a bloodhound for my family of 4, they are both great dogs, i would recomend a black labrador, but the bloodhounds are very lovable and will never be mean to you.

A Labrador Retriever. I have 3 and they are amazing dogs.  Very gentle and very smart.  Good with children.  I cannot imagine owning another breed

It depends on the age of your children.  If your children are all older, you could get anything from a small terrier to a large dog.  I'd say anything with lab in it is usually a good dog.  You want a  medium to large patient dog around smaller children.  Go to the shelter and tell them about your family.  Bring the family along.  Then pick out a dog together.

well i have a yellow lab and we got him when my brother was about 1 year old. its a male yellow lab and now is about 3 years. he is great with kids, like i said when my brother was only 1 my dog knew not to hurt him (unless you count l*****g him to death)

plus they are INSANELY smart dogs. it took my dog about 3 days to learn to use the bathroom outside.

now they do shed but the best thing about that is that the hair is white so its hard to see (unless on black obviously)

these dogs i must say are huge. mine is 130 pounds!

but i garentee that they will never try to hurt you. they are VERY lovable!

this is my first dog and he is safe,lovable,smart,easy to care for, and a great family oriented dog!

I would highly recommend a male yellow lab

Could you give some information on how old the kids are? How much time you have to exercise a dog, if you want big or small, if you have a fenced yard? etc.

Hard to recommend a dog without knowing the basics.

West Highland Terriers are very fun small dogs, they are smart, cute and playful.

Shelties are good medium sized dogs, very loyal, but have high grooming demands with there hair.

And lastly, my favorite German Shepherds are excellent large dogs, very loyal and friendly, but are a little more high activity and need more walks, fenced yard.

Get something thats known for its loyalty and it listens to you, DO NOT GET A HOUND. I have a beagle and i LOVE her to death but her nose is her main thing and thats it

Hi, i would go for a border collie, loving, kind, faithful and easy to train, also good with kids, or a labrador, all of the above, dont 4 get the exercise side of it also, collies are calmer than labs i have found, but both great with kids and people, good luck!!

i would talk to a vet or maybe a dogs rescue home  with 5 family members kids need a lot of feeding and food is money so dog wise maybe a newfoundland would be a bit to costly yet an adoring mongrel will gladly eat most things

It really all comes down to you and your families life style, age of kids, will the dog receive adequate exercise, etc. on what type and size of dog to get.

no heck no. Border collie needs too much stimulation I would not suggest one for a first time owner. Adopt a lab or golden. Medium amount of energy, plently for a family of 5, yet easy to train and live with. A border collie will probably drive you nuts.
