What is the best kind of dog to have if you have house rabbits?

We are wanting to get a dog. It would mainly stay outside, but occasionally would come inside. We have two house rabbits, which run freely around our house at all times (they are our babies, and we dont want to upset them), and we want to make sure they get along. I am wanting a bassett hound, but I have a fear he might want to eat my rabbits. Anyone have any ideas on which dogs would be the best for my bunnies?

  1. Well, I have a Border Collie, and she is afraid of my rabbit.

She tried to bite his butt when he was in his cage the first time we brought him home (it was a playing thing though).

Border Collies are super duper intelligent too.

    lol

Mine is older too, so I don't think she's too insecure about her position in our family.

  2. Well, if you get a puppy, it'll be raised around them and know they're off limits.

If you adopt an adult dog, you would want to avoid most of the hunting breeds. Many have a high prey drive, but there are the occasional ones that have little to no prey drive.

Want a Basset Hound? There may be one out there that is used to a house with small animals. Just takes time to find the perfect match.

  3. Get a greyhound. I hear greyhounds LOVE rabbits.

They like to chase them around and stuff.

  4. a fox dog... who is afraid of everything

  5. bassett hounds are hunting dogs so yes that would be a bad idea, im not sure what kind of dog you should get but leaving it outside? THATS CRUEL, if u want a dog AND rabbits, get the rabbits a cage and put them in it when the dog is in and when you let the dog out (for bathroom, walk, and play purposes ONLY) then let them out of the cage

  6. I wouldn't recommend getting any kind of hound. They instinctively would want to hunt your rabbits. It is very difficult to get a dog if you have small animals loose in the house. if you are set on getting a dog, get a small dog with no hunting background. There are a few websites that allow you to take dog breed quizzes. I recommend taking one of these quizzes and finding the perfect breed of dog for you.

  7. Probably A lhasa apso or a shizu
