The fountain is in Greensboro, NC so it won't freeze over exeot for once or twice, and it won't freeze very deep. I'm looking tospend under $30 and i would rather have a bunch of little fish than one or two big ones.

  1. The only ones I know of people using in ponds outside is gold fish or koi and I guess that's because they are cold water fish. The kois are a little more expensive than the goldfish. I got the goldfish I use to have in my pond from wal-mart the smallest ones they had that are like .28 cents a piece and they are so inexpensive that if you happen to loose a few its no big deal and they will multiply pretty fast mine did. They could get big but it usually depends on how big a home they have. The goldfish i had did great over the winter if the pond is deep enough they just go to the bottom where it doesn't freeze and if you have water plants they can be sunk in the deepest part of the pond  and will do fine too mine did

  2. Goldfish are both hardy and cheap. Birds will eat your fish, any they miss will go to neighborhood cats. How big they get will depend on the size of the pond they are in. Blue Herons eat ours here in Texas. The local pet/fish store can help you stock up on supplies. A couple of small catfish will help with keeping the pond clean. Good Luck!!!

  3. Japanese Koia, colorful and Hardy are your best bet! Happy Fishing!

  4. Depends a little what you like, Goldfish are very tough. Koi are very good too. You can get Fantails, or Shebumkins? I forget if that is their actual name. They have a bumpy forehead. There are others too. I haven't looked at fish in a while.

But I would also get a catfish or two. They help clean the pond. Just remember not to overstock the pond. The fish continue to grow as they age. The more fish, and bigger fish, the more they p**p in the water, and the higher ammonia levels get.

Also remember to acclimate your new fish to the pond. and let any new water sit to dissapate the chemicals before adding fish.
