What is the best kind of vacation to take around the holidays?

In terms of being inexpensive (or reasonably priced) and laid back?

I might want to travel during Thanksgiving and/or Christmas this year. I will most likely be alone as I'm sure no one would leave with me during the holiday season. I think I will need to do it for my sanity and peace of mind. I'm American and a woman.

Any destination in the world. Do you have any ideas or suggestions (solo travel at holiday times)? It's something I've never done before.

I'm in a similar position  so I'm going to be solo -backpacking Grand  Canyon NP and then maybe follow that up by hiking Canyonlands NP or possibly cycling the length of Death Valley NP

Even if you've done it as many times as I have  driving the big empty spaces of the American West is so damned awe inspiring that it's impossible to be "rolling down the road feeling bad" and if you've never seen it before it will just blow you away

If you make a box with

I-80 as the northern edge

I-40 as the southern edge

I-5 as the western edge

and the UT/CO +AZ /NM state lines as eastern edge the places within that rectangle are among the most beautiful in America and having seen them once you will always remember them
