I am going to have a 3-month-old kitten this week, and would like to get as much info on taking care of kittens.

Detailed responses will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  1. The best cat litter is World's Best Cat Litter (really, that's what it's called).  You can only get it from places like PetCo, PetsMart, etc. -- it is not available in grocery stores.  It's a clumping scoopable cat litter, and it's completely flushable because it's made out of biodegradable corn byproducts, so no clay to clog your drains and no little bags of cat poo waiting around to be taken out.  It has a pleasant smell, but is not scented so no problems with allergies to perfumes and such.  It is a little pricey (I usually pay about $23 for a 17 lb bag), but it lasts a good long while (about a month and a half with my one cat), especially if you're vigilant about scooping daily.

When I first started using it, my cat didn't like it (but he's an older cat, kinda set in his ways -- with a kitten you shouldn't have a problem).  So what I did was mix it half and half with his regular litter and kept increasing the new litter until I was just putting a thin layer of his old litter on top -- took a couple weeks.  Then I went to just the new litter.  He's perfectly happy using it now.

It's one drawback (besides the price) is that it tends to be a bit dusty/mealy.  My cat is black and when he's just gotten out of the litterbox he looks like he's wearing little sheer yellowish socks.  It also tracks a bit, so if you have dark carpets, you may need to vacuum a little more often around the litterbox area.  I have beige carpets, so you can't even see it on mine.

Best cat litter I've ever used though.  I'd never go back to clay.

  2. There are many great litters on the market and at one point or another, I have tried just about all of them!  And they all have their pros and cons.

For many years, I used the clay litters.  First the regular clay then the clumping.  I was never crazy about it, mainly for how dusty it is.  The next problem was it is 'heavy' when it is wet.  I have multiple cats and litter boxes, and I am tenacious about scooping, but I could never seem to keep up.

I have tried the silicone pearls and crystals.  The cats (aka 'the bosses') were not too crazy about them.  What I liked was no wetness in the boxes, it is that absorbent.  What I didn't like was the cost and little to no odor control when they defecate.  That litter could be close to $10 a bag and is advertised as 1 bag, 1 cat, 1 month.  Well, with 5 cats (at that time), it just wasn't worth the cost, because I was using a bag a week.

I tried the compressed paper (Yesterday's News) and the compressed wood (Feline Pine).  The litter starts out as about 1/2 inch pellets and breaks down into a sawdust consistency when the kitty urinates on it.  It has good wetness--the bottom of the box stays dry--and odor control.  But the bosses didn't like either of these.

One of the pros with these litters are they are available at grocery stores and WalMart, if these are the only places you have to shop.  Luckily, I now have a PetsMart close to me.

Now for the past six months I have gone to the ground grain litters.  I tried the World's Best Cat Litter (ground corn) and the bosses took to it fine, but when it is wet--even in a freshly cleaned box, it has a musty odor that my nose didn't like.

Then I tried the ground wheat, Swheat, and I am hooked!  The bosses like it and I like it.  There is absolutely no dust which is good for me and them..I hated the dust clouds each time I messed with the clay litters.  It does have an odor when the boxes are due for a cleaning, but that is true with any litter.  It is biodegradable and flushable.  But let me say again, I have multiple cats, 3 now, and one has a senior kitty illness that causes her to urinate alot.

Another reason I have been searching for a different litter than the clay type was the kitty I mention above.  Not only does she urinate alot, she had begun to have recurring urinary tract infections.  After three different incidents of heavy antibotics, and becoming reinfected between each, I started looking at what else could be aggravating her problems.  Her water intake was not an issue, she gets plenty of wet food with extra water added.  But another culprit according to my research was the dust that was stirred up when kitty gets in the box and starts digging..right to the moist area around the urinary tract.  I am happy to report we have had not the first reinfection since going to the Swheat.

I get mine at PetsMart and buy the 40lb bag for just over $25.  It also comes in 14lb and 25 lb size.  The 14lb should be enough for a single kitten, last you well over a month and cost about $10.

Purrs to you and your new kitten.

  4. I have always used Tidy Cats brand....its in a yellow bin with a blue top. Its for multiple cats. Even though I only have one. And my advice is....to  scoop out your kittens litter box at least twice a day. To prevent odors.

  5. We have always used Catsan - we buy from a cash and carry (Makro) for around £8 for a 20L sack, best at absorbing the smell!
