I would like to know the best laying breeds of chickens of brown white & black. They can be crossbreds

For brown is it a Rhode Island Red x Australorp (i think)

I'm not sure for the other two colors (black) & (white)

However i think a white leghorn is crossed with something for a white high laying chicken. For the black i think its an orpington crossed with something, an australorp maybe? Thanks for any help and suggestions.

  1. The black s*x link is a good laying chicken,it is a cross between a rode island red and a barred rock.

The red s*x link is a cross between a rode island red and a white leghorn.I have seen some really large eggs from both but the black s*x link is suppose to get a bit larger than the red if you want to get a dual purpose bird you would get more meat for stewing.

  2. I believe one of the best laying breeds is the blackrock hen which is a cross between the Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock.

Leghorns are originally white birds. The only other good laying chicken which is white and black that I know of is the light sussex and they are also prolific layers and generally considered a good dual purpose bird. The leghorn was crossed with something else to create the modern battery hybrid layer. Leghorns however tend to be quite flighty birds and some small scale hen keepers tend to be put off by this.
