What is the best lightweight and compact sleeping bag for backpacking South America?

Personally I don't think there is one "best bag".Obviously you will need one that is light and compact while still providing the warmth you will need for where you plan to go.(Back packing along  the gringo trail or trekking the Andes are two different things).

I also believe that the sleeping pad you use would be equally important.I would suggest going to somewhere like REI to discuss your specific needs with someone on the staff there who would be knowledgeable and perhaps able to show you a range of options...Best of luck and have a great trip.
