What is the best listening mode for my 7.1 surround sound system?

I have an Onkyo SR705 receiver that gives me a number of choices on listening modes. I am lookinf for the highest quality listening mode for my 7.1 system.

Dolby DIGITAL should be set to AUTO mode, and you should use the Optical or the Digital Coax inputs for your surround sound OUTPUTs to your Amp.....

Then the Stereo inputs will automatically get set to stereo....

AUTO has enough brains to distinguish the signal types and set it up accordingly.....
