Question:

What is the best location to pick up my car hire in Edinburgh area?

I'm planning a trip to Scotland in October and have an arrival at Edinburgh Airport. I'll use a taxi to get to my hotel and after spending a few days in Edinburgh, I would like to hire a car and spend some time on a driving tour.

I understand Edinburgh is difficult to navigate, so should I plan to return to the airport to pick up, or would it be better to just pick up at Waverly Station?

Also, any thoughts on local companies (ie: AutoEurope, etc.) vs. a global company such as Avis or Hertz?

Thanks!

S.

  1. I've travelled a lot and have always found that the big-name car hire companies give best value, better cars and better service than "local" firms.

  2. well if you want to spend a few days just looking at edinburgh then its best to wait untill you want to see the rest of scotland before getting a car. because the streets in edinburgh are very very busy and the bypass is way past the number of cars it was built for.

i think europecar is the cheapest and you can get it at the train station. but i would only get a car if you are wanting to see the highlands because you can get everywhere else from edinburgh alot cheaper and easier through bus and trains

  3. AutoEurope is just as good as Avis or Hertz. You can pick up your car at Waverley Station and if you wish to drop it off at the airport, you can do.
