I want to take photos of insects, butterflies, etc up close. Being able to do this farther away would be a plus also.

What would be the top 3 macro camera lenses and what would the cost be? Is 105mm better than 60mm?

  1. Vivitar 105mm f/2.8

  2. 105 Nikkor would be my top pick.  You can also get a zoom macro (Nikon calls them Micro) again I'd go with the Nikkor if money is no problem.  If you budget is a little tight, Tamron makes very good lenses that are available at a lower price.  If you are interested in macro photography, DON'T forget your flash equipement.  You'll need two flashes and a bracket to hold them.  A tripod is also a mandatory piece of equipment.  Get a good one, not some cheapie.  You could use beanbags for ground level macro work, but a tripod, like a bogen and a very good head are probably the most important piece of equipment, just as important as your lens choice.  Oh yeah and don't forget a cable release.
