Question:

What is the best margarine for cookies for someone with dairy allergy?

I would like to make some sugar cookies that are dairy-free for my milk-allergic friend. I know some margarines contain whey and that's a no-no. I want it to taste as close to real butter as possible, yet reasonably priced and readily available - and of course, suitable for baking. What do you recommend?

  1. Fleischmann's makes a good unsalted margarine that works well in baking, but I don't know if it has whey in it.

  2. Margarine doesn't usually have the right consistency for baking .... Use Crisco instead.  It makes for a softer cookie than butter anyways....(You can buy buttery Crisco too)

  3. The soy margarines available at health food stores and many large supermarkets are usually dairy-free.  If it has "vegan" on the label, you can guarantee it doesn't have ANY animal products (such as whey).

  4. We use either Parkay, Imperial or Blue Bonnet.
