looking for a somewhat hard material that will harden my hands but i will not be wearing gloves.

i do expect punching the bag to hurt slightly which is what i hope to overcome

this is why i am not wearing gloves

the bag is a 35 lb (pound) size bag and looks somewhat heavy duty so i dont expect it to rip

so.. water? rags? pebbles? sand? wet rags? small rocks? bark?

Thanks

  2. I've been teaching traditional Yang Tai Chi and Choy li fut style Kung Fu for over 30 years now. The Chinese use a canvas bag - any size. Fill it with Mung beans. Search, not hard to find. They won't be sprouting and they hold tight in the bag to allow for the effect of smacking a human bod. One thing, you cannot really "harden" your skin with iron palm training, only create calluses. You will be removing the natural oils of your skin as you train. If you are studying from a traditional authentic master - (Sifu) - he has the ability to offer you what is know as "dit - da - jow", or big hit medicine. This will relieve aches and pains and help condition the skin to return to its naturally subtle nature. It is made with different recipes in different kwoons - (Chinese schools of martial arts - like dojos for karate) - and are made from scratch and not "instant" like off the shelf. Most jows are made and placed in jars in the earth for months on end to age before ever allowed to use.

Anyway, hope you have a good qualified instructor working with you and keeping you straight on your hand positioning while smacking bags - don't want any aches and pains coming back to haunt you in your old age you know!

  3. Just buy a new one.  Clothes or rags will shift and you won't get the best effect.  Sand or stones will break your hands.  You hands might be tough for a little while but they will become injury prone very quickly.

Being Smart is always better than being tough and not using your head.  Wear the gloves.  Don't be a tough guy.  I guarentee, over a period of time, you will pay a heavy price if you hit the bag without gloves.  I speak from not just my own experience but that of many others.   Going "gloveless" will NOT make your hands any tougher than using bag gloves.  Believe me on this.

Either way I wish you luck.
