  1. It's true that homeschooling is ok because every child has different needs but a child who has been home schooled has no social attitude at all. Home schooled children are doomed.

  2. The first poster did very well.  *grin*   There is no one answer to that question.  Each family and each child is different.  What will work for one family or even one child, may not/will not work for another.

I use different things for all 3 of my kids.

My learning disabled dd for example, will not get the gifted instruction that my other dd gets.  Obviously that would not suit her.  She gets a style suited to her specific needs.

That's why homeschooling works.  It's not a one size fits all curriculum.

  3. The best method is the one that suits the children and the teacher best. Both of these are important, since they are all in it together. It also depends what sort of education you want for them. They might have opinions on what topics they do or don't want to study, but they don't have the ability to judge according to the future as you do. There will always be topics that "You have to do because I say so." Just try not to portray it that way :)

I'm intending to follow the classical method using The Well Trained Mind. Other friends have said it's a bit too authoritarian for them (we attend a Steiner playgroup.) I agree that it can be that way, but I'm looking at Steiner philosophies as a way of softening it. I think kids benefit from having formal and informal times. I don't think it will matter if I'm a touch regimented if this is balanced with informal play. That's the way I am, which is why I'm putting so much effort into making sure I don't overdo it. Basically, whatever style you choose to go with, it's best to keep reading. No style is ever going to be perfect, you will always want to add and subtract stuff; you just need to choose one method to be the foundation you work off.

I think it's important to train kids in academic skills, then they will be able to do whatever they want. If they can read, write, research and think, they'll achieve. If they aren't taught these things, they'll always be capped at a certain point. I also believe kids need practical skills too, so we'll garden, cook, shop and since we're involved in the SCA, we'll knit, sew, weave, dye, learn rapier and archery, and whatever else comes our way.

  4. Because every child learns differently there is no best way! My children will do things differently every time every day. Every child here will learn in a different way so there can't be a best way for everyone but only the best way for you. That is what makes home school so wonderful is that you can make it work right for each child. Instead of the same thing working for every child

  5. Look at the reason you are homeschooling and the needs of the child. Help them devise a plan that works for them and you. All children are different and different methods will work for them. Your welcome.

  6. Unschooling is the best method for homeschooling.  It is designed specifically for the individual family considering the needs of each individual.  It leads to harmonious relationships and indepth study into areas of interest beyond what can be done using other methods.  There are no time constraints that leave projects undone, or stopped while momentum is strong.  You can go more places and interact with a wider variety of people with the extra time.

  7. There are infinite methods of homeschooling, each tailored for individual children. That is the beauty of homeschools:If a child has trouble learning a particular subject they are not simply labeled as "dumb","dense",or "ADHD".

The mom (typically mom anyway) lovingly explains it until the child fully understands the concept.

However, some children understand right away and others are a little slower,so there is no "best method" they are all good.

  8. The best method is one which fits best with the family.

  9. Question one.    The best method of homeschooling is a function of the individualized needs, learning styles, strengths and weaknesses of the student and primary teaching parent.

Question two.   Because people are all different.

    You are welcome.
