What is the best method for removing the smell of animal urine from non-fabric materials?

I have had a few items returned to me that have a distinct cat odor. I know how to neutralize it with laundry items, however, I am stuck with getting it out of the books and puzzles. Any suggestions (minus doing anything to the animals, as they are not mine and I have nothing to do with them) is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  1. Essential oils mixed in water bind with the odor molecules and get rid of the odor.

You can try baby powder and then wipe it off.

  2. I'm not sure you can --- might be just worth chucking them.

However, for runners and backpacks, I've used original Listerine (yellowish) mixed equal pats with water.

Please give your solution for using with other items - I'll put this on my watchlist!!!

  3. While there are store bought items that you can spray on to get rid of odors, these can leave your books wet. The best bet could be stuffing the books and puzzles in a plastic bag and pouring some baking powder on them. Close the bag for at least half an hour then either shake them clean or use a vacuum. You can repeat the process until the smell is neutralized. Just don't forget to separate each set of puzzles or you'll end up with more work sorting them out ; ).Good Luck!
