What is the best method for stopping a breakaway as a goalie?

i was always tought to lead with my hands and dive in and create a wall in front of the ball while it was about to be shot. but ive also been tought to creep up on the forward and stay big and wait to make a move. if anyone has any advice on the best method please let me no

  1. there's not really a best method. It really depends on what kind of keeper you are and how quick you are. From my personal experience as a goalie i have decided that the best method for myself is to run at the forward dive to the ball (this is key don't dive back) and get your hands behind the ball. My current goalie coach is Zak Abdel, the goalie coach for the U.S. men's national team, and this is how he has taught me.

  3. You should creep up and watch the striker's body. If he is relaxed, there is a good chance he will lob the ball so make sure you can't be lobbed. If he is looking down he is about to blast it or dribble, either way he is not paying attention to you so go out and dive in front of him, arms on the outside. get down quick so he can't put one under your arms. If the attacker is composed and looking up, there is a chance you might be screwed. Go meet him but don't dive until your sure you can get the ball. A good striker can easily score from one on ones, so you just have to try your best.
