I think it best to go direct to the needy person.In these days of scams (relief material sold in the market, even red cross funds used by beaurocrats to pay their expenses on luxuries etc etc) people dont trust the government agencies or even private N.G.O s who travel by air, stay in 5-star hotels etc when they go to distribute relief to the miserable people.They are more into getting themselves photographed distributing relief, than actually doing it. You can use these agencies to locate the persons and do the charity directly.

Volunteering is a great way to contribute to a charity. So is donating money, but volunteering is very rewarding.

I have been involved in charity work much of my life in one way or another.  I've worked for government programs,international giants like Red cross,and tiny grass roots nonprofits.  Based on this experience I am convinced that local grass roots groups acting alone,in partnership with similar groups, or as an at least semi autonomous part of a larger group are the best way.  Local people understand local situations. They may often know the individuals involved directly or indirectly. They know what does and does not work in their community.   Accountability works better locally too.   I have a strong preference for volunteer driven organizations because those who are active volunteers generally do so because they care.  Faith based groups are often very effective.   Here are sites of a couple of groups that I believe meet these criteria http://www.caringhandsministries.com   http://lampga.tripod.com
