What is the best military Aircraft in the world and why?

B-2 "Spirit" Stealth Bomber

The B-2 is not only exotic and costly (2 Billion each) but is unique in it's capability.  It replaces a whole group of aircraft in it's roll.  They usually fly non-stop from the United States to the other side of the world, drop bombs with pinpoint accuracy, fly non-stop back to base all completely undetected.

The best ones for the following categories would be the question:

1) Bomber.......B-52 still flying after 50 years

2) F-4 Phantom II.......over 5,000 built and proven in combat

3) Transport........C-130 Hercules, still in production

4) Tanker..........KC-135 still flying

5) Recon..........SR-71A

6) Trainer.........T-38 Talon

I have to say the C-130 as that bird just won't die! it is an outstanding and durable aircraft that has really stood the test of time and does a variety of missions without fail.

Choosing the "best" airframe is a loaded question. Each one serves a specific purpose. So you have to look at the "best" all-round aircraft.

The KC-10 Extender is the best military aircraft in the world. A close second is the KC-135.

Without it, all of the little fighters and big cargo aircraft would not have the range that they do. The tanker multiplies the force capability of all of the fighters and cargo acft by enabling them to take off with lighter fuel loads (which translates to more ordinance) and receive gas in the air.

Without the tanker aircraft, the fighters would be EXTREMELY limited in mobility - they would have to make multiple stops on their way overseas. This would take a long time. They would also have to be stationed much closer to their target, which makes them more vulnerable to attack.

The only reason the KC-10 is a better airframe than the 135 is because it has a cargo mission and can carry more fuel.

the F-22 is an awesome fighter.   Anxious to see what is next on the agenda.

The SR-71, Blackbird, was an awesome aircraft of it's time.  I had the opportunity of working on them.  By today's standards, they are outdated and have been retired.    The SR-71 was a reconnaissance aircraft.   It had a sister called FY-12A which was an interceptor aircraft.  Not in the same class of the F-22.

I think it is the SR-71 Blackbird.

The aircraft flew over 3500 missions w/o ever being shot down, plus it will do more then mach 3. It is hands down the fastest manned plane in the world.
