  2. There is no one best month.  You would need to plan the trip according to the prevailing weather at the time. Most likely you would avoid the colder months of October to March but what you would want is a window of light to moderate south-westerly winds with low risk of any large high or low pressure systems crossing the north atlantic.  With well over a hundred miles it will take you 24 to 48 hours at least and the higher risk of trouble comes in the first half when there is less shelter.  So you might choose to start at midnight so you get good light for the first bit of open crossing and as you get into the clyde estuary you have the choice to veer left or right to get some shelter if the need arises.
