I need to find something relatively light, strong, easy to machine, and cheap. A product I am designing may either require a few metal bars and gears, or some heavy duty springs that would need to withstand strain from the weight of a human. I am not too good with physics, and haven't taken many specific courses in metallurgy, but I have a manufacturing education and background.

  1. You can use stainless steel or aluminium or mild steel...

  2. Usually steel or aluminum is used.

Aluminum is easier to machine and lighter, but steel is much stronger and tougher.

  3. wrought iron

  4. aluminum hands down.  cost is higher than others, but durable, malleable, corrosion resistant (powder coated, etc...)

  5. steel is good
