  1. whatever you do. Do not go with a CHEAP computer. I spent 1500 dollars on mine. Yes there are things I don't need, but the possibility of it breaking is compounded the cheaper you go.

  2. I'm a PADI Scuba Instructor in Guam and I used and see a lot of 'puters. I also own a $1000 (retail in Japan when it 1st came out). Sunto Spyder. I love it, but changing the battery is expensive. I log about 600+ dives a year and the battery only lasts about 1 yr. at a cost of $75. I also own a few that costs about $200.

Reliability is pretty good with almost all at any price range but I would suggest you get the best you can afford. Look for one that meets your needs.

Some are expensive due to added features like Mix gas and capabilities to download info to your PC computer.

If you do a recreational dive and your computer fails, do a normal ascent and safety stop. As long as you do not exceed the deco limit or do a decompression dive you can abort the dive and ascend.

Water temp is just a reference for you so you can plan your  dive gear accordingly (ex.Guam water temp=29 degrees centigrade=3 mm wetsuit or less)

Talk with your local dive shops for more info...hope this helps, good luck and happy diving!!
