  1. depends on what the rockers are made of - are they wood or someother material.  they have spray paint that pretty much will cover all materials such as plastic, metal, wood, wicker, etc.

  2. If these rockers are made of wood and if they will be exposed to the weather and you want to keep them for a long time, I would suggest a few things:

First of all, use an oil based enamel, Benjamin Moore is a reliable brand. Duron, if you have Duron in your area, is a good brand. I would not go cheap and buy a store brand of paint.

If you're anywhere near the coast, consider using a marine-grade paint, or, consider cutting your black enamel with some true, marine grade spar varnish. The real stuff, the real marine spar varnish has more gum in it and stays more flexible. This is a good thing for wood, which will move seasonably (expand and contract and humidity rises and falls) and also because the chairs will likely flex a bit from being sat on.

Use more thin coats than fewer heavier ones for the best and most durable paint film.

Since you're repainting, spend some time prepping them to remove any loose paint and also to scuff up the existing paint so that the new finish will have some "tooth" to adhere to.

I would recommend brushing, rather than spraying oil based enamels as the clean up is a disaster with the oil based.

  3. ...hmmm, what type of paint, flat or gloss, is on the rockers?

...if gloss, then sand them lightly with 180, thoroughly. Then apply a base of flat exterior latex as a primer

....since you are going to 'black' the base color is not required to be any color like white.

...then you might like to use enamel, as the weather resistance of enamel is superior to most latex

.....however, many semi-gloss to glossy latex are available today

...on the other hand you may prefer an oil-based enamel, and should ask for recommendations from a Home-Depot technician as to any such benefits that might be derived from oil-based paint over water-based enamel or latex

....my experience with outdoor wood furniture is based on pressure treated outdoor furniture ....and since these are rockers....they don't need industrial strength paint, juz some weather protection.....but

if these are not pressure treated wood, then go with the oil-base over an oil-based primer

  4. I certainly wouldn't go to Home Depot for advice. I agree, the black will get hotter. Also a dark color will not last as long. Spray cans will cost a fortune compared to brushing.

First lightly sand, like was said, 180 grit or 150 grit. No need to go finer.

Paint with an exterior, oil base, enamel. It will last the longest. Two coats if you don't get good coverage over the white the first go around.

  5. Any of the exterior rated paints would work well.  You can buy house paint, and brush it, or if you have a sprayer, spray it on.

Rustoleum, or Krylon are also good exterior paints... I'd suggest buying a 'trigger' for the spray can..makes it easier on the finger, hehe.

You want to lightly sand the rockers first, and wipe them down, to remove any dust.  This will help the new paint to adhere better.

If you are going to spray the paint, some helpful tips are:

Don't spray too heavy in one spot... its better to come back with another pass, and this helps avoid runs in the paint.

Start the spray pass OFF of the surface, and continue with an even stroke, till you are OFF the surface again.

Hold the nozzle so that it is perpendicular to the surface, and MOVE the sprayer... do not hold the sprayer in place, and simply 'angle' it to reach farther... you end up with less paint on the ends, and more in the middle that way.  That one trick alone will make a big difference in the finished results.

Spray your hard to reach areas FIRST.

Most paints can have a second coat in about an hour after the first.  Keep that in mind, if your hard to reach areas leave you with a few runs in the paint... let those dry, sand the runs off, and then apply the finish coat.

And, I'd suggest keeping the rockers in the shade after painting them black... hehehehe... they'll get very hot, if left out in full sunlight, which could come as a surprise to anyone wearing shorts when they sit in one, lol

    Have Fun

  6. Enamel paint is the best.

  7. I would suggest black paint is the the best paint to buy if you want to paint something black.
